Over the years, a tradition developed whereby lovers would bring a padlock to this gorgeous stretch of seaside and bolt the lock to one of the mesh fences.  Travellers that hike the Cinque Terre trail between Manarola and Riomaggiore are sure to see them.  The name of this trail is appropriately named "Love's Trail"  (Via dell'Amore).
